How to Cycle a New Fish Tank

To cycle a new fish tank, you grow beneficial bacteria that turn toxic ammonia into nitrite and then into far less harmful nitrate. Add an ammonia source, test the water regularly, and wait until both ammonia and nitrite read zero within 24 hours while nitrate rises. That usually takes several weeks — and it's the most important step in fishkeeping.

A brand-new tank of clean water looks ready, but biologically it is empty. It has no colony of bacteria to process the waste your fish will produce, so ammonia climbs quickly and burns gills, fins, and skin. Cycling builds that colony before the fish arrive. Doing it properly is the difference between a tank that thrives and the heartbreak known as "new tank syndrome."

The nitrogen cycle in one paragraph

Fish waste and uneaten food release ammonia (NH3), which is highly toxic. One group of bacteria converts ammonia into nitrite (NO2), which is also toxic. A second group converts nitrite into nitrate (NO3), which is much less harmful and removed by water changes. A cycled tank has enough of both bacteria groups to keep ammonia and nitrite at zero. Your job during cycling is to feed those bacteria and wait for them to multiply.

Fishless cycling, step by step

Fishless cycling is the humane, reliable method — no animal is exposed to toxic water while the colony grows.

  1. Set up the tank fully: dechlorinated water, heater at your target temperature, and filter running. Warmer water speeds the process.
  2. Add an ammonia source — bottled pure ammonia dosed to a few ppm, or a small pinch of fish food left to break down.
  3. Test ammonia and nitrite every day or two. Ammonia will rise, then start to fall as bacteria appear; nitrite will then rise and later fall.
  4. Keep topping the ammonia back up so the growing colony has food, but don't let it spike far higher than needed.
  5. The cycle is complete when a dose of ammonia is processed to zero ammonia and zero nitrite within 24 hours, with nitrate now present.
  6. Do a large water change to bring nitrate down, then add fish gradually — a few at a time — so the colony can scale up with the new load.

Speeding it up safely

You can shorten cycling by seeding the tank with established bacteria: squeeze mulm from a mature filter, add some used filter media, or use a quality bottled bacteria starter. These give the colony a head start, but you still confirm with tests — never assume a tank is cycled just because you added a product.

Tip: don't rinse your new filter media in tap water or replace all of it at once, ever. That is where your bacteria live. Losing the media means losing the cycle and starting over.
