Which Aquarium Water Parameters to Track (and When)
The core aquarium water parameters worth tracking are temperature, pH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate, with GH and KH useful for many tanks. The two worth adding for many tanks
General hardness (GH) and carbonate hardness (KH) describe the mineral content of your water. KH in particular buffers pH — low KH lets pH swing more easily, which stresses fish. If your pH seems unstable, or you keep species with specific hardness needs (shrimp, rift-lake cichlids, soft-water tetras), tracking GH and KH explains a lot that pH alone can't.
How often to test
Frequency should follow the tank's situation, not a fixed rule:
- New or cycling tank: ammonia and nitrite every day or two until both hold at zero.
- Established, stable tank: nitrate and pH weekly, usually alongside your water change; a full panel every few weeks.
- After a change: new fish, a death, a big water change, or new equipment all justify extra testing until things settle.
- Something looks wrong: test before you treat. Most "sick fish" turn out to be water problems, and treating blind can make it worse.
