How to Identify a Stamp From a Picture
To identify an unknown stamp, work through four things in order: the country, the denomination, the design subject, and the physical characteristics — perforations, watermark, and paper. A clear photograph of both sides, taken flat in even light, gives you or an image-recognition tool almost everything needed to narrow a stamp to a specific issue. The exceptions are the details a camera cannot see, and knowing which those are is half the skill.
Step 1: find the country
Most stamps print their country of origin, but not always in a language or alphabet you read. A few conventions help enormously:
- Great Britain prints no country name at all. As the country that invented the postage stamp, it was granted the permanent exception. Instead, British stamps carry the monarch's silhouette. If a stamp shows a royal profile and no country, that is your answer.
- Latin and archaic forms are common. Helvetia is Switzerland, Magyar is Hungary, Sverige is Sweden, Suomi is Finland, España is Spain, Nippon is Japan, and Österreich is Austria.
- Countries that no longer exist are a strong signal. Names such as Bohemia and Moravia, Danzig, or the various colonial administrations date a stamp to a narrow window automatically, which is often more useful than the country itself.
- Overprints override the base stamp. A surcharge or overprint means the stamp was reissued by a different authority, at a different value, or for a different territory. Overprints are frequently where the value is — and frequently where the forgeries are.
Step 2: read the denomination
The face value narrows the date range, because currencies get reformed. A denomination in a currency a country no longer uses places the stamp before that reform. Numerals in a non-Latin script are worth learning to recognise for the countries you encounter often; for everything else, this is exactly the sort of pattern-matching an identification app handles well.
Step 3: use the design
The subject — a monarch, a head of state, an anniversary, a bird, a building — usually places the stamp within a series, and series are how catalogs are organised. A commemorative naming an event and a year is the easiest case there is. Definitives, the everyday stamps reissued for years in many values, are harder: the same design may run for a decade across dozens of denominations and several printings, and telling those printings apart is where the physical characteristics come in.
Tip: photograph the back as well as the front. Gum, hinge remnants, watermarks, and the paper itself often separate a common printing from a scarce one, and a front-only photo throws that information away.
Step 4: the physical details
These are what separate a rough identification from a precise one, and most of them are hard or impossible to read from a casual photograph.
- Perforation gauge — the number of perforation holes in a fixed length. The same design issued with different gauges can differ enormously in value. Measured with a perforation gauge, which costs very little and is worth owning.
- Watermark — a design pressed into the paper during manufacture, visible when held to light or, more reliably, in watermark fluid on a black tray. Watermark differences routinely distinguish printings that look identical.
- Paper and printing method — laid versus wove paper, chalky surfaces, and whether the stamp was engraved, lithographed, or typographed. Under magnification these are usually distinguishable.
- Imperforate edges — a stamp with straight, uncut edges may be a legitimate imperforate issue, a booklet or coil edge, a genuine error, or simply a perforated stamp someone trimmed. These possibilities are worth very different amounts.
How to photograph a stamp for identification
- Lay it flat on a plain, contrasting background — a sheet of paper works.
- Use even, indirect light. Daylight near a window beats a flash, which blows out detail and creates glare on any gloss.
- Shoot straight down, not at an angle, so the shape and perforations aren't distorted.
- Fill the frame with the stamp, keeping the whole perforated edge visible.
- Photograph the back too, in the same conditions.
- Leave it on its cover. If the stamp is still attached to an envelope, photograph the whole envelope — postal history often outweighs the stamp itself.
What automated identification can and cannot do
Image recognition is strong at exactly the parts that are tedious for a person: reading a country name in an unfamiliar script, matching a design to a known series, placing a date range, and converting all of that into a plain-language answer in seconds. For triaging an inherited album, that is most of the work.
It is weak — and should be treated as such — on everything in step 4 that a camera cannot capture. A photograph does not reveal a watermark, does not measure a perforation gauge, and does not weigh or chemically test anything. It also cannot establish authenticity: forgeries of valuable stamps are often photographically convincing, and the tests that expose them are physical. An automated identification tells you what a stamp appears to be. Confirming what it is, when it matters, needs a specialist.
