Pantry-First Meal Planning: Free Weekly Template
A pantry-first meal plan starts with an inventory, then chooses meals that share ingredients. Write down what you have, decide which dinners fit your actual week, and buy only the missing amounts. The free template below turns that sequence into a reusable planning sheet.

Take a small inventory before choosing recipes
Look in the fridge, freezer, and one cupboard. You do not need a complete kitchen database. Record the ingredients most likely to shape this week's dinners: vegetables, proteins, cooked components, and staples you regularly use. Write a rough quantity and location so “rice” becomes “about two cups of dry rice, upper cupboard.”
Separate “available” from “needs checking.” Read storage instructions and assess whether an item is suitable to use; this planning sheet cannot determine food safety. Do not build a meal around something merely because you feel guilty about discarding it. Mark uncertain items for a separate check before they enter the plan.
Choose dinners for the week you actually have
Give each evening a realistic time allowance. A late arrival might need a familiar quick dinner, while a quiet evening can accommodate a new recipe. Reserve one flexible slot instead of assigning seven different projects. The flexible slot gives you somewhere to move a meal when plans change.
Next, pair one inventory ingredient with a complete meal idea. Chickpeas could anchor a salad, pasta dish, or stew, but do not schedule all three unless your household wants that repetition. The aim is a plan you will follow, not the maximum possible number of ingredient overlaps.
A worked three-dinner example
Suppose you have dry pasta, a can of chickpeas, rice, and two peppers, and you have confirmed that the ingredients are suitable to use. You might plan chickpea pasta for Monday, rice bowls with peppers for Tuesday, and a flexible dinner on Wednesday. Pick specific recipes before deciding what to buy; a meal name alone is not enough to establish quantities.
If both chosen recipes need onions, check the combined requirement against what is already at home. If one needs a garnish used nowhere else, decide whether you want the extra purchase or a different recipe. This example illustrates planning logic; it is not a nutritionally complete menu or a guarantee of lower grocery spending.
Turn gaps into a shopping list
- Write the required quantity for each recipe at the serving count you intend to cook.
- Subtract the usable amount already available, comparing like units.
- Combine repeated ingredients, keeping unlike forms separate: dry rice and cooked rice are different entries.
- Check package sizes before buying. If the smallest package exceeds your immediate need, note a later use.
- Review optional extras separately from the ingredients that make the meal work.
Keep a short “not buying” note for ingredients already covered. It can prevent a duplicate purchase when you shop from memory. For a fuller workflow, read how to connect a meal plan and grocery list.
Use and revise the free template
The CSV includes a row for each day and columns for dinner, ingredients on hand, missing ingredients, servings, time available, and changes. Open it in a spreadsheet app or print it. The download is a website resource; it does not require an account or assume your meal-planning app can import CSV files.
At the end of the week, record what you actually cooked. If a recipe was skipped twice, find out why before placing it on next week's plan. An inconvenient recipe is not a personal failure. Move successful dinners into a small repeatable rotation, and keep your flexible slot.
Soti is another way to organize dinner planning. Whether you use an app or this sheet, keep the same order: inventory, realistic meals, missing quantities, then shopping.
