Reading Time Calculator: Words to Minutes

Estimate how long a text will take at your own reading pace, then divide it into manageable sessions. Enter a word count—no document upload needed.

How to calculate reading time from word count

Divide the word count by your reading pace in words per minute. For 1,500 words at 200 WPM, the result is 7.5 minutes, or 7 minutes 30 seconds. The tool also rounds up the number of sessions required at your chosen session length.

Reading minutes = word count ÷ words per minute. This is a planning estimate. It does not test your reading speed or comprehension, and the 200 WPM starting value is an editable example rather than a target.

How long does it take to read 1,000 words?

At a pace you set to 200 WPM, 1,000 words takes five minutes. A slower or faster pace changes the estimate as shown below. None of these examples means you should push to a particular speed.

Pick a reading pace that matches the material

Use a recent reading session with similar material: count the words you read, divide by the minutes spent, then check what you can explain without looking back. If understanding is weak, use a more comfortable pace and include rereading time. The reading comprehension log helps record both pace and recall.

A familiar novel, a dense technical chapter, and a text in a second language are different tasks. A speech also includes delivery pauses and should use a measured speaking pace. Page count alone is unreliable because layout, font size, and illustrations change the number of words on a page. Use the document's word count where possible.

How many reading sessions do you need?

A 12,000-word text at 200 WPM requires an estimated 60 minutes of continuous reading. With 15-minute sessions, that is four sessions. A 13,000-word text takes 65 minutes and needs five sessions: four full sessions and a final five-minute session. Breaks and note-taking sit outside this estimate.

Download the result and attach it to your reading plan. If you consistently take longer, adjust the pace using your own observations.
