Laboratory sample and container inventory
A useful inventory identifies each research container and keeps its recorded state, dates, and reconciliation history together.

Core inventory fields
- Abstract sample, batch, and container ID
- Documented material type and source reference
- Initial and remaining laboratory volume or mass with units
- Record date, review date, and status
- Notes, reconciliation history, and archive state
Reconcile from records
Keep each inventory change as its own timestamped entry. Compare the recorded balance with a separately verified observation, preserve variances, and never overwrite history to force agreement.
Use neutral identifiers
Identifiers such as Sample A and Container A-014 keep the record focused on laboratory provenance and reduce the chance of mixing unrelated batches.
