Laboratory dilution and concentration math
Dilution records preserve the relationship between an initial stock concentration, the portion transferred, and the final laboratory volume.
Safety scope: Laboratory research calculation, inventory, and record keeping only. This page provides no human or animal medical, dosing, administration, injection, treatment, or usage guidance. Independently verify every input and result.
The dilution equation
C1 is the recorded initial concentration, V1 is the laboratory aliquot volume, C2 is the resulting concentration, and V2 is the final total laboratory volume. Use one compatible concentration unit and one compatible volume unit throughout.
Abstract record example
A worksheet for Sample B can store C1, V1, C2, and V2 as labeled fields, mark one field as unknown, and preserve the equation used to solve it. Before accepting the result, check unit compatibility, transcription, significant figures, and whether V2 means final total volume rather than added volume.
Documentation checklist
